Sumatra Road

West Hampstead

Our scheme involved removing the whole rear wall of the property and adding this partial glass extension to create an integrated kitchen and breakfast room opening the whole property out onto the garden. Originally the tired looking kitchen of this two bedroom maisonette was accessed via a dark and labyrinth like corridor and landing. The inside of the flat turned its back on this fairly sizable garden which is a rare amenity for any property in London.

  • Our client wanted the new extension to have some character perhaps with a rustic, industrial look. Further inspiration was taken from an abstract painting that was to hang in the new space. This painting was taken as a catalyst for the choice of finishes, materials and colours that were used in the refurbishment.

The local authority building control insisted that the internal wall between the kitchen and the staircase had to remain for fire protection so to give light to the stairs and integrate it into the space we punched through a window fitted with fire resistant glass. This window was then dressed with an antique Moroccan ornamental grate and carved shutters.
